Are you a graduate student passionate about Southeast Asia or ASEAN studies?
Do you want to conduct field-based research in the region and connect with fellow scholars across Asia?
The ASEAN–Korea Young Scholar Research Grant is your opportunity to gain funding,
mentorship, and international exposure as part of a growing network of regional experts.
What is the Grant About?
This annual program supports graduate students from:
• ASEAN Member States (including Timor-Leste, expected to become a member in October 2025)
• Korea
To support your on-site fieldwork and help you grow as a future leader in Southeast Asian and ASEAN studies.
What You’ll Gain
• Funding for fieldwork in ASEAN countries or Korea, excluding your country of origin
• A chance to present your research at the ASEAN–Korea Young Scholar Workshop
• Networking with scholars and institutions across the region
What We’re Looking For
We’ll select 12 graduate students every year—one each from the 11 ASEAN countries (including Timor-Leste) and one from Korea. Your research should focus on:
• ASEAN or specific ASEAN countries
• ASEAN–Korea relations
• Comparative or thematic topics aligned with ASEAN–Korea priorities
Priority Research Areas
The grant supports a broad spectrum of topics, ranging from ASEAN studies and comparative or country-specific research to ASEAN–Korea relations.
ASEAN studies and ASEAN Member States specific country studies
ASEAN-Korea relations and comparative research
ASEAN-ROK cooperation priorities (e.g., gender, climate change, sustainable development, cyber security, peacebuilding)
ASEAN Post-2025 Vision themes (e.g., integration, connectivity, institutional development, identity politics, regional geopolitics)
Interdisciplinary studies in science, technology, and engineering with Southeast Asian relevance
Are You Eligible?
You can apply if you:
• Are a citizen of an ASEAN Member State, Timor-Leste, or Korea
• Are currently enrolled in a Master’s or Doctoral program at an accredited university in ASEAN or Korea located in your country of origin
• Plan to conduct at least 3 months of fieldwork related to ASEAN/Southeast Asian studies
Researchers whose studies focus on their own country are not eligible to apply for this fieldwork grant.
What’s Covered?
Each selected student will receive:
• Round-trip airfare (up to USD 1,000)
• Monthly stipend of USD 1,300 (up to 3 months) to cover accommodation and research
costs
Key Dates
• Application Deadline: November 6, 2025
• Fieldwork must complete no later than April 2026
• Fieldwork must last a minimum of 3 months
• Longer fieldwork is welcome, but funding is capped at 3 months
How Are You Selected?
Applications are reviewed based on:
• A clear and relevant research question
• Strong understanding of academic literature
• Sound research design and methods
• Need for fieldwork
• Language skills (where applicable)
• Previous academic or field experience
What Are Your Responsibilities?
If selected, you’ll be expected to:
• Submit a mid-term report within 6 weeks after arrival of the fieldwork site
• Submit a final research report within 4 weeks of completing the fieldwork
• Acknowledge the grant in any future publications or theses
• Join the ASEAN–Korea Young Scholar Workshop to present your findings (online)
Academic Support
During your fieldwork, you’ll be:
• Affiliated with a host university or research institute
• Paired with local scholars for academic guidance
• Supported with administrative and academic help from your host institution
